Edwards' simple descriptions and cheerful  pen and watercolor illustrations take the reader step by step through the old-fashioned production of a handmade book. Though the story's instructional values are not clear, it is not a dry exercise. Dora has her own likable quirkiness and believable affection for Tom and her other friends.
